An allegorical etching by Eugène Gaujean depicting Happiness and Cupid guiding a young family in a boat, rendered with fine classical detail.
This etching by Eugène Gaujean, dated 1879, translates the allegorical painting by Constance Marie Charpentier (often misattributed to Constance Mayer) into a monochrome medium. The composition depicts a small boat navigating a calm body of water. At the helm, a figure representing Happiness guides the vessel, while a winged Cupid assists with the oars. Within the boat, a young family rests in a state of repose, suggesting a journey through life protected by these benevolent forces.
Gaujean demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the etching needle. He employs varied line weights to differentiate between the soft textures of the figures' drapery and the more rugged, shadowed bank in the background. The play of light across the water is achieved through fine cross-hatching, which creates a sense of depth and atmospheric stillness. The figures are rendered with the classical proportions typical of late nineteenth-century French academic art, prioritising clarity of form and narrative legibility.
The work appeared in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, a publication that provided high-quality reproductions of fine art to a wider audience during the period. Gaujean was a skilled reproductive engraver, a profession that required a deep understanding of the original painter's intent while adapting the composition for the specific constraints of the printing plate. By removing the colour, the artist draws attention to the structural composition and the interplay of light and shadow, which define the emotional tone of the scene. The quiet, domestic nature of the subject matter reflects the period's interest in idealised family life and classical mythology. This print serves as a record of the original painting's composition, preserving the visual information for study and appreciation outside of the gallery setting.
