Beskrivning
A geometric, expressionist composition by Heinrich Campendonk featuring a stylized cow set against a village of angular, colourful houses.
Heinrich Campendonk was a central figure in the Der Blaue Reiter group, a collective that sought to express spiritual truths through non-representational colour and form. This work, Gelb-weiße Kuh vor Häusern, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the rural subject, which he often treated with a sense of mythic simplicity rather than realistic observation.
The composition is constructed through a series of geometric planes that overlap and intersect. The cow, rendered in simplified, blocky forms, occupies the foreground, yet it remains integrated into the architectural environment of the village behind it. Campendonk employs a bold, non-naturalistic palette, where primary colours dominate the structure of the houses and the animal itself. The use of sharp angles and flattened perspective reflects the influence of Cubism, which the artist adapted to suit his own interest in folk-inspired, mystical imagery.
Unlike his contemporaries who focused on urban alienation, Campendonk maintained a consistent interest in the relationship between animals and their environment. The cow, a recurring motif in his oeuvre, acts as a bridge between the domestic architecture and the natural world. The brushwork is deliberate and direct, allowing the texture of the paint to remain visible across the surface. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs the viewer toward the rhythm of the shapes and the interaction of the colours. This piece captures the experimental spirit of the early twentieth-century avant-garde, where the objective was to move beyond the surface appearance of reality to reach a more immediate, emotional resonance.
