A sun-drenched scene of rural life in Provence, capturing a figure and donkey beside an orange tree through the distinct square-brush technique of Henry Herbert La Thangue.
Henry Herbert La Thangue, a prominent member of the Newlyn School, produced this work during his later period when he shifted his focus from the grey, overcast skies of Cornwall to the sun-drenched regions of Provence and Liguria. The painting captures a quiet moment of rural labour, depicting a figure tending to a donkey beside a laden orange tree. The composition relies on the interplay between the deep, dappled shadows cast upon the stone wall and the bright, warm light filtering through the foliage.
La Thangue was known for his square-brush technique, a method that allowed him to apply paint in distinct, block-like strokes. This approach creates a textured surface that mimics the flickering quality of Mediterranean sunlight. The palette is dominated by earthy ochres, soft pinks of the architecture, and the deep greens of the citrus leaves, punctuated by the bright yellow of the fruit. Unlike the more sentimentalised rural scenes common in late Victorian art, this piece maintains a focus on the physical reality of the environment. The donkey, a common beast of burden in the region, is rendered with anatomical precision, and the figure is integrated into the scene through the careful observation of light and shadow rather than narrative artifice.
This work reflects the artist's interest in plein-air painting, a practice he adopted after his studies in Paris. By moving away from the studio, La Thangue sought to capture the immediate sensation of the southern climate. The result is a study of light that avoids excessive detail, preferring instead to convey the atmosphere of a specific time and place. The painting remains a clear example of the British fascination with the Mediterranean, a theme that occupied many painters of the era who sought to escape the industrialisation of their home country.
