This woodblock print is part of the Hoeido edition of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, a series that established Utagawa Hiroshige as a master of the genre. The composition depicts the Sarugababa Plateau near the post station of Futakawa. Hiroshige employs a stark, minimalist approach to the terrain, using a sweeping diagonal line to separate the travellers from the vast, open expanse of the plateau.

The scene features three figures walking along a path, their forms rendered with simple, clean lines. To the left, a small structure provides a sense of scale, while the distant, sparse vegetation on the hillside suggests the quiet, desolate nature of this particular stretch of the Tokaido road.
