Fujisawa: Yugyo Temple - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the town of Fujisawa, the seventh station on the route connecting Edo to Kyoto. The composition centres on the Yugyo-ji temple, which sits atop a wooded hill, overlooking the bustling post station below.

In the foreground, a dark torii gate frames the scene, drawing the eye toward a wooden bridge where travellers cross a stream. Hiroshige employs a clear sense of depth, contrasting the intimate scale of the pedestrians with the grand architecture of the temple complex. The colour palette relies on soft gradients in the sky, transitioning from a pale orange to white, which suggests the early morning or late afternoon light. The blue of the stream provides a cool balance to the warm tones above.

Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the structural elements of the buildings and the organic forms of the trees. The repetition of the thatched roofs creates a rhythmic pattern that guides the viewer through the town. This work captures the atmosphere of travel during the Edo period, documenting the infrastructure and daily life of the Tokaido route.
