Fujieda: Station 23 (Reisho Tokaido) - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print, titled Fujieda: Station 23, belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series by Utagawa Hiroshige. The series depicts the fifty-three post stations along the Tokaido road, which connected Edo to Kyoto. Unlike his earlier, more famous Hoeido edition of the same subject, this version uses the reisho (clerical) script for the series title, which gives the set its common name.

Hiroshige captures a scene of travellers caught in a sudden downpour. The composition is defined by the vertical lines of rain, which cut across the image and create a sense of atmospheric depth. Two large trees frame the foreground, while the figures, clad in straw rain capes and hats, navigate a narrow path between flooded rice paddies. The muted palette of greens, browns, and soft greys reflects the damp, overcast conditions of the day. A horse, also protected by a straw covering, follows the group, adding a sense of movement to the quiet, sodden environment.

The artist employs a sophisticated use of colour gradients, particularly in the sky and the water, to suggest the transition from the heavy clouds above to the saturated earth below. The figures are rendered with simple, functional forms, emphasising their struggle against the elements rather than individual identity.
