A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting a serene domestic scene at Fuchu station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Fuchu, one of the stops along the Tokaido road. Unlike the more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which focuses on the topography and weather of the route, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tokaido stations often incorporates domestic or genre elements. The composition centres on three women within a traditional Japanese interior, framed by sliding shoji screens that open onto a veranda.
The architectural lines of the building provide a structured grid, contrasting with the fluid, organic forms of the figures. One woman sits on the veranda holding a small dog, while the other two figures are positioned inside, engaged in a quiet interaction. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones of green, red, and ochre, which are characteristic of early nineteenth-century printing techniques. The print demonstrates Hokusai’s ability to balance human activity with the built environment, creating a sense of stillness and domestic order.
Technically, the work displays the precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines defining the garments and the structural elements of the house. The inclusion of the veranda and the suggestion of a garden beyond the wooden railing adds a sense of depth to the scene. This print offers a glimpse into the social life of the Edo period, capturing a moment of leisure rather than the rigours of travel. It remains a fine example of Hokusai’s versatility, showing his skill in depicting interior spaces and human figures with the same attention to detail he applied to his more widely recognised natural subjects.
