Beskrivning
A 1922 Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a calculated, geometric arrangement of a fruit dish, glass, and knife in muted tones.
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, remains a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In this 1922 composition, Fruit Dish and Glass, the artist employs his characteristic method of geometric construction. Unlike the fragmented, analytical approach of earlier Cubist works, this piece demonstrates a more ordered, architectural arrangement of forms. The objects, including a glass, a fruit bowl, and a knife, are flattened and reassembled to create a rhythmic interplay between the foreground and the background.
The palette is restrained, relying on deep terracotta, muted greys, and soft whites to define the spatial relationships. Gris often began his process with a mathematical grid, ensuring that each element occupies a specific, calculated position within the frame. The inclusion of the word fragment 'L-P-A-L' in the background suggests the presence of a newspaper, a common motif in Cubist still-life painting that bridges the gap between the painted surface and the reality of the modern world. The edges of the objects are softened, yet the underlying structure remains rigid and deliberate.
This work reflects the artist's focus on the synthesis of objects rather than their mere representation. By simplifying the visual information into essential shapes, Gris invites the viewer to reconstruct the scene mentally. The composition avoids unnecessary detail, favouring a clear, balanced distribution of mass and colour. The result is a study in stability and formal precision, characteristic of the artist's mature period in the early 1920s. It provides a clear example of how Cubist principles were applied to traditional subject matter to create a new visual language.
