Jean Arp, a central figure in the Dada movement and later Surrealism, created works that sought to bridge the gap between organic form and geometric abstraction. Frond and Navel is a characteristic example of his biomorphic approach, where shapes appear to grow or divide like cellular structures. The composition relies on a stark division of space, using a diagonal black band to separate fields of cream and red. Within this arrangement, Arp places simplified, rounded forms that suggest biological elements without directly representing them.

The blue, V-shaped form, which gives the work its title, interacts with the surrounding colours through a sense of fluid motion. Arp often referred to these shapes as concrete art, meaning they were not abstractions of reality but objects in their own right. By stripping away representational detail, he focused on the rhythm of the lines and the balance of the primary colour palette. The inclusion of small, circular motifs provides a counterpoint to the larger, more elongated shapes, creating a visual tension that is typical of his work from this period.

Arp moved away from the chaotic, anti-art stance of early Dada towards a more controlled, meditative aesthetic. This piece demonstrates his interest in the laws of chance and the natural growth patterns found in the physical world. The smooth, clean edges of the forms reflect his background in sculpture, where he prioritised the tactile quality of materials. In this print, the flat application of colour maintains the integrity of the original wood-based composition, allowing the viewer to appreciate the interplay of shape and void.
