Boris Kustodiev, a painter and graphic artist, produced this ink drawing during a period when his health was in decline, forcing him to focus on smaller scale works. The composition depicts two figures returning from a fishing trip, carrying their rods and a catch. A camel grazes in the background, a detail that introduces an element of the unexpected into an otherwise mundane rural scene. Kustodiev often explored themes of Russian provincial life, blending observation with a degree of stylisation.
The drawing employs a confident, economic use of line. Kustodiev uses varying weights of ink to define the silhouettes of the men and the texture of the landscape. The hatching in the sky and ground provides a sense of atmosphere without cluttering the visual field. The figures are rendered with a focus on their posture and the weight of their equipment, conveying a sense of weary satisfaction after a day of activity.
