A refined colour woodblock print by Henri Rivière, capturing a quiet riverbank scene at Bas-Meudon with the stylistic influence of Japanese ukiyo-e.
Henri Rivière was a central figure in the late nineteenth-century French printmaking scene, particularly noted for his assimilation of Japanese aesthetic principles into Western subjects. This work, depicting an old wash-house (lavoir) at Bas-Meudon, demonstrates his mastery of the woodblock medium. The composition relies on a flattened perspective and a deliberate, limited colour palette, techniques directly inspired by the ukiyo-e tradition that captivated Parisian artists of the era.
The scene captures a quiet moment along the riverbank. The structure of the lavoir occupies the left side of the frame, its weathered timber rendered with precise, rhythmic lines. Rivière balances the architectural elements with the organic forms of the trees and the gentle ripples of the water. The inclusion of laundry hanging on the right bank adds a human element to the industrial setting, grounding the image in the daily life of the region. The muted tones of ochre, grey, and soft brown reflect the artist's preference for atmospheric, rather than literal, representation.
Rivière produced this work during a period when he was deeply engaged with the possibilities of colour lithography and woodblock printing. His work often focused on the outskirts of Paris, finding beauty in the mundane structures of the industrialising suburbs. By applying the stylistic rigour of Japanese printmaking to the French countryside, he created a distinct visual language. This print offers a view into a vanished era of river life, presented with a clarity and restraint that remains characteristic of his broader body of work. The presence of the artist's seal in the lower corner confirms the influence of Eastern print traditions on his creative process.
