A surreal lithograph by German artist Heinrich Hoerle, featuring geometric figures and organic forms rendered in precise, clean lines.
Heinrich Hoerle, a central figure in the Cologne Dada movement and later associated with New Objectivity, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with the human form. Friendly Dream displays the characteristic reduction of the body into geometric, almost mechanical components, a hallmark of his mature style. The composition features a reclining figure partially submerged in a dark, flowing mass, from which a slender plant emerges. A second figure stands atop this dark form, reaching towards the fruit of the plant. The stark contrast between the black ink and the neutral paper background emphasises the clean, precise lines that define Hoerle's draughtsmanship.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of the organic and the constructed. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Hoerle directs attention to the spatial relationship between the figures and the symbolic plant. The imagery suggests a dreamlike state, where the boundaries between the human body and the natural world become fluid. Hoerle's approach to anatomy is not intended to represent reality in a traditional sense, but rather to construct a visual language that communicates psychological states through simplified, rigid forms. The work avoids emotional excess, opting instead for a cool, detached observation of the scene. This print provides an example of the shift in German art during the interwar years, moving away from the chaotic energy of early Expressionism towards a more controlled, analytical mode of representation. The clarity of the line work and the deliberate placement of each element demonstrate Hoerle's technical precision, which remained consistent throughout his career despite his stylistic shifts.
