Free Wheeling, created in 1993, demonstrates the economy of gesture that defined Helen Frankenthaler's later graphic work. Unlike her earlier soak-stain paintings, which relied on the fluid interaction of thinned pigment and raw canvas, this etching and aquatint focuses on the precision of the line and the deliberate placement of colour. The composition features a series of radiating lines that converge near the centre, creating a sense of kinetic energy contained within a static frame. These lines possess a hand-drawn quality, suggesting spontaneity despite the technical requirements of the printmaking process.
Around the perimeter, small, irregular patches of primary and secondary colours provide a counterpoint to the stark, linear structure.
