A 4th-century Coptic textile fragment featuring an intricate, interlaced guilloche pattern woven in wool on a linen ground.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, dating to the 4th century. It represents a shoulder band, or clavus, which was a decorative element applied to tunics during Late Antiquity. The piece consists of a linen ground fabric with a woven wool design. The ornamentation features a continuous, interlaced guilloche pattern, which creates a sense of movement through its rhythmic, braided structure. The contrast between the dark wool threads and the lighter linen background defines the geometric clarity of the design.
Textiles from this era often served as markers of status and identity. The use of complex weaving techniques to produce such precise, repeating motifs demonstrates the technical proficiency of weavers in the Nile Valley during this period. The fragment shows signs of age, including fraying at the edges and variations in the weave, which provide evidence of its original function as part of a garment. The design relies on symmetry and the repetition of the interlocking loops to fill the vertical space of the band. Such decorative elements were common in the wardrobe of the period, often placed on the shoulders or down the front of tunics to denote the wearer's social standing. This specific fragment is preserved in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is studied for its contribution to the history of weaving and garment construction in the Mediterranean world. The simplicity of the two-tone palette allows the focus to remain on the structural geometry of the weave itself, rather than on representational imagery.
