A fourteenth-century illuminated manuscript leaf by Lippo Vanni, featuring two historiated initials with martyrs, Gothic script, and Gregorian chant notation.
This manuscript leaf originates from a fourteenth-century missal, a liturgical book containing the texts necessary for the celebration of the Mass. Attributed to the Sienese painter and illuminator Lippo Vanni, the work displays the characteristic refinement of the period. The page features two historiated initials, each containing the figure of a martyr holding a palm branch, a traditional symbol of victory over death. The figures are rendered with the delicate facial features and soft modelling typical of Vanni's style, set against gold-leaf backgrounds that catch the light.
The text is written in a formal Gothic script, accompanied by square musical notation on four-line red staves. This notation indicates the plainsong or Gregorian chant intended for the feast day of the martyrs. The surrounding margins are decorated with foliate flourishes, which extend from the initials in a style common to Italian manuscript production of the mid-fourteenth century. The use of tempera and gold leaf on vellum provides a surface that has retained its clarity and colour over several centuries.
Lippo Vanni was active in Siena and is known for his work in both panel painting and manuscript illumination. His ability to integrate narrative figures within the constraints of a liturgical text demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship required for such commissions. This print captures the precise details of the original parchment, including the texture of the surface and the subtle variations in the ink. It offers a view into the devotional practices and aesthetic values of the medieval Church, where the visual arts functioned as an integral component of the liturgy. The composition balances the weight of the text with the decorative elements, creating a harmonious page layout that remains functional for the reader while providing visual interest.
