A detailed nineteenth-century wood engraving by William Frederick Measom, depicting a fox in a naturalistic setting after a drawing by Harrison Weir.
This wood engraving, executed by the British engraver William Frederick Measom, depicts a fox in a naturalistic setting. The composition is based on an original drawing by the noted animal illustrator Harrison Weir. Measom was a prolific engraver during the mid-nineteenth century, frequently collaborating with publishers to produce illustrations for books on natural history and rural life. His technical skill allowed for the translation of delicate pencil or ink drawings into the durable medium of wood blocks, which were then used for mass printing in periodicals and educational texts.
The image captures the animal in a moment of quiet observation. The fox is positioned with its forepaws resting upon a raised bank, its head turned to survey the area beyond. Measom employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the texture of the animal's fur, the soft underbelly, and the coarse grasses surrounding the den. The contrast between the dark, dense lines of the fox and the lighter, more sparse strokes used for the background vegetation creates a sense of spatial depth. This work reflects the Victorian interest in the precise observation of the natural world, a period when scientific inquiry and artistic representation often overlapped in popular literature.
As an example of nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking, this piece demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship required to maintain the integrity of the original artist's vision during the engraving process. The lines are clean and purposeful, showing a mastery of the burin. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the era, where such illustrations served as the primary means for the public to engage with the details of wildlife and the British countryside.
