Kawanabe Kyōsai was a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his technical skill and his ability to capture movement with economy of line. This work depicts a fox in mid-leap, having secured its prey. The composition relies on the diagonal tension created by the fox's body, which stretches across the frame to connect the upper right corner with the lower left.

Kyōsai employs a monochromatic ink wash technique, typical of his training in the Kanō school, while adding subtle touches of colour to the foliage. The bamboo and berry-laden branches provide a sense of place, grounding the predatory action in a natural setting.
