Caspar David Friedrich, a central figure of German Romanticism, produced this work using sepia wash and pencil. The composition depicts a dense, skeletal woodland scene during the final stages of autumn. The artist focuses on the textures of gnarled, leafless branches and the decaying wood of a fallen tree in the foreground. The lack of foliage allows for a clear view into the depths of the forest, where the vertical lines of the trunks create a rhythmic, almost claustrophobic structure.
Friedrich often used nature as a vehicle for contemplation. In this piece, the absence of human figures directs the viewer to observe the cycle of growth and decay.
