A refined 17th-century Mughal manuscript folio featuring elegant Nasta'liq calligraphy, gold illumination, and delicate bird motifs.
This exquisite folio originates from a manuscript of the Panj Ganj, or Five Treasures, by the 15th-century Persian poet Jami. Produced in India during the early 17th century, the work reflects the high standards of the Mughal court atelier. The central panel features Nasta'liq script, a style of calligraphy prized for its fluid, elegant curves and balanced proportions. The text is arranged in two columns, separated by gold-flecked vertical dividers, which provide a structured frame for the poetic verses.
The margins of the page are decorated with delicate, gold-painted floral motifs against a dark background, a common feature of luxury manuscripts from this period. Small, detailed illustrations of birds are integrated into the margins, adding a sense of life to the formal layout. The use of gold leaf throughout the illumination demonstrates the high status of the original manuscript, which was intended for a royal or aristocratic patron. The paper itself is of high quality, treated to provide a smooth surface for the ink and pigments.
Mushfiq, the artist associated with this work, was active during the early 1600s and is known for his precision in both calligraphy and marginal decoration. The interplay between the dense, rhythmic text and the surrounding ornamental borders creates a visual harmony typical of Mughal book arts. This print captures the fine details of the original manuscript, from the subtle variations in the ink weight to the metallic sheen of the gold illumination. It offers a glimpse into the sophisticated literary and artistic culture of the Mughal Empire, where the written word was treated as a visual art form of the highest order.
