Beskrivning

A detailed botanical study of tropical flowers and foliage by the Victorian explorer and artist Marianne North.

Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented global flora with scientific precision. This work depicts the flamboyant blooms of a tree encountered during her travels in Madagascar. North worked primarily in oil on board, a choice that allowed her to capture the specific textures of petals and leaves while enduring the humidity of tropical environments. Her approach was distinct from the typical botanical illustrators of her time, as she preferred to paint specimens in their natural habitats rather than as isolated samples against a white background.

The composition focuses on the contrast between the feathery, deep green foliage and the fiery orange-red blossoms. North utilised a clear, direct technique to render the delicate structure of the flowers, which appear to be a species of Delonix or a related member of the Fabaceae family. The background provides a glimpse of the wider environment, suggesting the scale and context of the plant within the Madagascar terrain. Her work is held in high regard for its accuracy and the sheer volume of species she recorded before the advent of colour photography.

North donated her entire collection to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where a purpose-built gallery was constructed to house her paintings. This specific piece reflects her ability to balance aesthetic appeal with the requirements of scientific documentation. The clarity of her brushwork and her keen observation of light on organic surfaces remain the defining characteristics of her output. By choosing to travel independently, North broke from the conventions of her era, providing a unique visual record of plants that were often unknown to European audiences at the time. This print offers a view into her methodical process and her dedication to the natural world.

Artist Biography

Marianne North

North considered marriage a terrible experiment that turned women into a sort of upper servant. Her inheritance depended on staying single, and she kept it. Between 1871 and 1885, she travelled to fifteen countries in fourteen years, almost always alone.

She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.

She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
