A striking example of modern Chinese ink painting, this work features monumental rock formations and a cascading waterfall rendered through dense, rhythmic brushwork.
Yu Cheng-yao, a former military officer who turned to painting in his later years, developed a distinct approach to the traditional Chinese shan shui (mountain and water) genre. His work departs from the soft, atmospheric brushwork common in classical ink painting. Instead, he employs a dense, repetitive layering of short, dry brushstrokes to construct monumental rock formations. This technique creates a sense of geological weight and structural complexity that feels almost architectural.
In this composition, the viewer is presented with a towering verticality. The craggy peaks dominate the upper register, their surfaces articulated through a rigorous application of ink that suggests the texture of weathered stone. A waterfall descends through the centre of the image, providing a vertical axis that draws the eye downward through the composition. The contrast between the stark white of the cascading water and the dark, textured masses of the surrounding cliffs creates a rhythmic visual tension.
Yu Cheng-yao did not seek to replicate the natural world through mimesis. His paintings are constructed through a process of accumulation, where individual marks coalesce into larger forms. The result is a vision of nature that feels both ancient and constructed. The absence of human figures or architectural elements reinforces the sense of a primordial, untamed environment. By focusing on the raw materiality of the ink and the repetition of his mark-making, Yu Cheng-yao bridges the gap between traditional literati painting and modern abstraction. This print captures the tonal range of his original ink work, from the deepest blacks of the shadowed crevices to the subtle grey washes that define the distant, receding peaks.
