Beskrivning
A striking still life by Edouard Vuillard, capturing a floral arrangement on a fireplace mantel with bold colours and a flattened, decorative perspective.
Edouard Vuillard, a member of the Nabis group, is recognised for his domestic scenes that prioritise atmosphere and colour over strict realism. This work, depicting flowers on a fireplace in Clayes, captures a private moment within a French interior. The composition is defined by a bold, flattened perspective, a hallmark of Vuillard's later period. He employs a non-naturalistic palette, where the bright yellow walls contrast with the deep blues and purples of the window view and the fireplace mantel.
The artist uses short, visible brushstrokes to construct the form of the floral arrangement. Rather than detailing individual petals, he focuses on the interplay of light and shadow across the surfaces. The fireplace mantel acts as a stage for the vases, while the open window invites the exterior light to interact with the interior space. This creates a sense of enclosure, typical of Vuillard's focus on the intimacy of home life.
His approach to colour is subjective. The yellow background does not merely represent a wall colour, but rather the sensation of light within the room. By simplifying the shapes and emphasising the decorative qualities of the paint application, Vuillard moves away from the traditional representation of still life. The work reflects his interest in the decorative arts, where the surface of the canvas is treated as a unified pattern. This piece provides a view into the artist's personal surroundings in Clayes, where he spent significant time during his later years. The lack of rigid lines and the focus on colour blocks allow the viewer to experience the scene as a collection of light and mood, rather than a precise documentation of objects.

Flowers on a fireplace in Clayes - Edouard Vuillard
Artist Biography
Edouard Vuillard
He joined the Nabis in the early 1890s, a group of young painters who took their name from the Hebrew word for prophets. The others (Bonnard, Denis, Serusier) were drawn to mysticism and esoteric philosophy. Vuillard was drawn to the interior. His mother's workroom, with its bolts of fabric, wallpaper patterns, and women in patterned dresses, became his subject. The paintings flatten space: the figure merges with the wallpaper, the dress dissolves into the upholstery, the room becomes a single surface of competing patterns. Critics called the approach Intimism.
He painted almost exclusively domestic scenes: rooms, tables, women sewing, women reading. The scale is modest. The colours are muted. There is no drama, no allegory, no mythology. The work assumes that a woman sitting in a chair in a room with good light is enough to make a painting, which it is.
He never married. He lived with his mother until she died and then lived alone. In the late twentieth century, historians began to reassess his decorative work (screens, murals, theatre sets for Lugne-Poe's Theatre de l'Oeuvre) and recognised that the small domestic paintings were not minor work but a deliberate programme: the interior as a subject equal to landscape or history.
