A seventeenth-century Italian still life by Orsola Maddalena Caccia, featuring a detailed floral arrangement in a sculptural, grotesque-style vase.
Orsola Maddalena Caccia, a nun and painter active in Moncalvo, produced this still life during the seventeenth century. The composition features a variety of botanical specimens arranged within a sculptural, grotesque-style vessel. The vase itself, modelled with zoomorphic features, provides a stark contrast to the delicate organic forms of the lilies, peonies, and irises that emerge from its opening.
Caccia demonstrates a precise approach to the depiction of flora. Each bloom is rendered with attention to its specific structure, from the tightly furled petals of the tulips to the open, trumpet-like forms of the white lilies. A butterfly rests upon a dark iris, adding a sense of momentary stillness to the arrangement. The background is a muted, uniform brown, which pushes the floral elements forward and allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the petals and the metallic sheen of the vase.
This work reflects the broader interest in natural history and botanical study that occupied many artists of the period. Unlike the more crowded, overflowing arrangements typical of some Dutch masters, Caccia maintains a sense of order and clarity. The inclusion of a single peach on the surface beside the vase introduces a secondary texture, balancing the composition. The painting is characteristic of the artist's output, which often combined religious themes with a keen observation of the natural world. Her ability to capture the specific character of each plant, while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic, is evident in the balanced distribution of colour and form throughout the frame.
