Beskrivning
A refined still life by Gino Severini, featuring a mandolin, flowers, and drafting tools rendered in a clean, geometric style.
Gino Severini, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, transitioned during the 1920s and 1930s toward a more structured, classical approach to composition. This work, Flowers and Masks, reflects that shift. It displays a disciplined arrangement of objects, including a mandolin, a vase of flowers, and geometric drafting tools, set against a stark black background. The composition avoids the chaotic energy of his earlier Futurist period, opting instead for a balanced, almost architectural order.
The print employs a limited, controlled palette. The soft ochres, muted blues, and greys contrast with the deep black field, creating a sense of graphic clarity. Severini uses flat planes of colour to define the forms, reducing the objects to their essential geometric components. The inclusion of a small, stylised cityscape at the base of the frame provides a sense of scale and suggests a connection between the interior still life and the external world.
This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in the mathematical principles of art, a subject he explored extensively in his theoretical writings. The presence of the compass and the precise, clean lines indicate a focus on proportion and harmony. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Severini directs the viewer to the relationship between the objects and the space they occupy. The work is a fine example of the return to order that characterised much of European art between the wars, where artists sought to reconcile modern abstraction with traditional subjects like the still life. The print remains a clear representation of Severini's technical precision and his ability to synthesise diverse visual elements into a cohesive, rhythmic whole.
