A refined 18th-century Chinese ink and colour painting on silk, depicting birds and flowering roses in a balanced, classical composition.
This work by Zhang Ruoai, a scholar-official during the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the traditional bird-and-flower genre. The composition features a balanced arrangement of flora and fauna, typical of the period's academic style. A central rock formation anchors the scene, providing a base for the climbing rose bushes that extend towards the upper left. Below, a small group of birds occupies the grassy bank, rendered with precise brushwork that captures their posture and interaction.
The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle washes of colour against the aged silk ground. This technique creates a sense of harmony and quiet observation. The lines are delicate, reflecting the training of a literati painter who prioritised control and clarity. The inclusion of a single insect in the upper right adds a small element of movement to the otherwise still scene. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the naturalistic depiction of the subjects.
Zhang Ruoai was known for his service in the imperial court, and his artistic output often mirrored the refined tastes of the era. This piece is characteristic of the courtly aesthetic, where technical proficiency and adherence to classical themes were highly valued. The silk support has acquired a warm, golden tone over time, which integrates with the ink washes to produce a unified visual effect. The painting invites close inspection of the brushwork, particularly in the rendering of the bird plumage and the texture of the rock. It remains a representative example of 18th-century Chinese ink painting, documenting the intersection of nature study and artistic tradition.
