A delicate circular fan painting by Zhang Xiong, featuring a toad beneath pomegranate blossoms and daylilies, rendered in traditional ink and colour on silk.
Zhang Xiong was a prominent figure of the Shanghai School, a group of artists active during the late Qing Dynasty who moved away from rigid traditionalism towards a more expressive, individualistic style. This circular composition, or fan painting, demonstrates the artist's mastery of the bird-and-flower genre. The work features a toad positioned below a cluster of flora, including what appear to be pomegranate blossoms and daylilies. The toad is rendered with a textured, mottled wash that captures its amphibious nature, while the flowers are depicted with delicate, controlled brushwork and subtle colour gradients.
The composition is balanced by the inclusion of calligraphy and red seal marks on the left side, which provide a visual counterweight to the botanical elements on the right. The use of a circular format, common in fan painting, requires a specific approach to space, where the subject matter must harmonise with the curved boundaries of the silk. Zhang Xiong achieves this by allowing the stems and leaves to extend towards the edges, creating a sense of natural growth within the confined space. The palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted greens, and touches of red to define the forms against the neutral tone of the aged silk.
This piece reflects the technical precision expected of the period, yet it maintains the spontaneity characteristic of the Shanghai School. The ink work is fluid, showing the artist's confidence in his brush control. By focusing on a small, quiet interaction between the toad and the surrounding plants, the artist invites the viewer to observe the details of the natural world. This print captures the texture of the original silk and the nuances of the ink application, offering a clear view of the artist's hand and the specific aesthetic values of nineteenth-century Chinese painting.
