Beskrivning
A detailed botanical study by Marianne North, featuring the Flor Imperiale, a coral snake, and a spider observed during her travels in Brazil.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented flora and fauna across the globe. This work, produced during her time in Brazil, captures the Flor Imperiale (a species of Haemanthus) alongside a coral snake and a spider. North worked primarily in oil on canvas, a choice that allowed her to capture the specific textures of petals and the scales of reptiles with precision. Her approach was empirical, focusing on the accurate representation of specimens in their natural habitats rather than stylised or decorative arrangements.
The composition places the spherical flower head at the centre, providing a vertical anchor against the rugged, textured background. Below, the coral snake is rendered with careful attention to its distinct banded pattern, creating a contrast between the delicate, radiating stamens of the flower and the sinuous form of the reptile. The inclusion of the spider adds a narrative element to the scene, suggesting the interconnected nature of the ecosystem North observed.
North donated her extensive collection of paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they remain housed in a dedicated gallery. Her work is valued for its scientific observation and the sheer scale of her undertaking, as she travelled to remote locations without the support of modern infrastructure. This print reproduces the original oil painting, maintaining the clarity of her brushwork and the specific colour palette she employed to document the biodiversity of South America. The work provides a window into the nineteenth-century fascination with natural history and the documentation of exotic species for a European audience.

Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
