A detail from the Herrenberg Altar, this fresco depicts the Holy Family on their journey to Egypt with a focus on human realism and period-accurate attire.
This work is a detail from the Herrenberg Altar, a complex polyptych created by the German painter Jerg Ratgeb. The scene depicts the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt, rendered with the distinct stylistic traits of the early sixteenth-century German school. Unlike the idealised depictions common in Italian Renaissance art, Ratgeb presents the figures with a grounded, almost rustic quality.
The Virgin Mary is shown seated upon a donkey, cradling the infant Christ. She wears a large, dark hat and a heavy cloak, suggesting the practicalities of travel. Beside her, Saint Joseph walks with a staff over his shoulder, from which various tools and vessels are suspended. His attire, including a wide-brimmed hat and practical tunic, reflects the contemporary dress of the period rather than biblical costume. The donkey, central to the composition, is depicted with a weary posture, its head lowered towards the ground.
Ratgeb employs a muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and soft greys. The application of paint shows the characteristics of fresco technique, with visible brushwork and a matte finish. The figures possess a sculptural weight, their forms defined by clear outlines and subtle shading. The background remains somewhat indistinct, allowing the focus to remain on the physical exertion and human reality of the figures. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in narrative clarity and his departure from the more refined, courtly styles of his contemporaries. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of Joseph providing a counterpoint to the horizontal movement of the donkey and the seated Virgin. It remains a notable example of the expressive, often idiosyncratic, nature of German religious art during this era.
