Li Shan, a prominent member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, produced this ink wash work during the Qing Dynasty. The composition focuses on the rugged, gnarled forms of pine trees, which serve as traditional symbols of longevity and resilience in Chinese art. Li Shan employs a free, expressive brushwork style that departs from the rigid academic standards of his era. The trunks are rendered with varied ink tones, creating a sense of texture and age, while the needles are suggested through quick, rhythmic strokes.
The work features extensive calligraphic inscriptions, a common practice in literati painting that integrates poetry with visual imagery. These inscriptions provide context, personal reflection, and artistic commentary, effectively merging the two disciplines. The ink application demonstrates a mastery of water-to-pigment ratios, allowing for subtle gradations that define the depth and volume of the trees without relying on traditional perspective.
