A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting the Five Tiger Generals of the Shu Han state, rendered in the distinctive surimono style.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts the Five Tiger Generals of the Shu Han state, a subject drawn from the historical narrative of the Three Kingdoms. Gakutei, a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, was a master of the surimono format. These prints were privately commissioned, often for poetry circles, and are characterised by their high-quality paper, metallic pigments, and refined printing techniques.
The composition arranges the five figures in a dense, overlapping formation. Their attire reflects a stylised interpretation of historical military dress, featuring patterned robes and layered armour. The background is filled with a stippled texture, which provides a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print identifies the figures and provides context for the scene, linking the visual image to the literary tradition of the period.
Gakutei was known for his ability to combine classical Chinese themes with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period. His work often displays a balance between the rigid requirements of historical illustration and the decorative needs of the surimono genre. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, ochres, and soft reds to maintain a sense of harmony across the composition. The lines are precise, reflecting the skill of the carver in translating the artist's brushwork into the woodblock medium. This print is an example of the sophisticated output produced for the cultural elite of nineteenth-century Japan, where literature and visual art were closely intertwined.
