Beskrivning

A 1927 Surrealist work by Max Ernst, featuring his signature grattage technique to create a textured, dreamlike forest scene.

Fishbone Forest, painted in 1927, represents a period in the career of Max Ernst where he experimented with the technique of grattage. This method involved scraping layers of wet paint from the canvas to reveal textures underneath, often using objects like floorboards or wire mesh to create the patterns seen in the dense, dark vertical forms of this work. The result is a forest that appears both organic and mechanical, resembling the skeletal structure of fish or the rigid lines of industrial machinery.

The composition is divided into distinct zones. A bright, horizontal sky of orange and yellow dominates the upper portion, punctuated by a dark, circular sun or moon. Below, the forest occupies the middle ground, rendered in deep browns and blacks with a repetitive, rhythmic texture. In the foreground, a strip of green provides a base for several white, shell-like or stone-like forms that sit in contrast to the dark verticality of the trees. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, dreamlike space that characterises much of the Surrealist output of the 1920s.

Ernst was a central figure in the Dada and Surrealist movements, consistently exploring the intersection of the subconscious and the physical world. His use of texture here serves to remove the hand of the artist from the final image, allowing chance and material properties to dictate the visual outcome. The forest is not a literal representation of nature but a psychological construct, inviting the viewer to interpret the relationship between the stark, alien sky and the textured, impenetrable barrier of the trees. This piece remains a clear example of how Ernst utilised technical innovation to push the boundaries of representational painting, creating imagery that feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic.

Artist Biography

Max Ernst

Ernst invented frottage because he was staring at a wooden floor. He was in a hotel room in 1925, looking at the grain of the floorboards, and saw figures and landscapes in the patterns. He placed paper over the surface and rubbed it with graphite. The textures that emerged, wood grain transformed into forests, oceans, and strange organic forms, became the basis of his painting technique for the next decade.

He was born in Brühl, near Cologne, and studied philosophy and art history at the University of Bonn. He had no formal art training. He saw a Picasso exhibition, joined the Rhineland Expressionists, served in the German army during the First World War (artillery), and emerged with what he described as a compulsion to find something beyond rational thought. Dada gave him the method. Surrealism gave him the framework.

His collage novels, made from cut-up Victorian engravings reassembled into dreamlike narratives, are among the most original works of the twentieth century. Une Semaine de Bonte (A Week of Kindness, 1934) is a series of 182 collages arranged in five chapters, each associated with an element and a day of the week. The imagery is violent, erotic, and funny. The source material, melodramatic Victorian illustrations, is treated with deadpan seriousness.

He married four times. His second wife was Peggy Guggenheim (briefly). His fourth was the painter Dorothea Tanning. He moved to America during the war, lived in Sedona, Arizona, and then returned to France. He died in Paris in 1976, the night before his eighty-fifth birthday.
