Fish and Lotus - Kano Yasunobu

This hanging scroll, attributed to Kano Yasunobu, demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Kano school during the Edo period. Yasunobu, the younger brother of Kano Tan'yu, held a position of authority within the shogunate-sponsored painting workshops. His work often adhered to the established stylistic conventions of the school, which balanced Chinese ink-wash traditions with Japanese decorative sensibilities.

The composition features a carp emerging from the water, positioned alongside a single lotus bloom. The artist employs a range of ink tones to define the scales of the fish, creating a sense of movement as it breaks the surface. The lotus, rendered with subtle washes of colour, provides a vertical counterpoint to the curved form of the fish. The negative space surrounding the subjects is characteristic of the period, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the aquatic life and the flora.

Kano Yasunobu was known for his mastery of the brush, and this piece reflects his ability to capture natural forms with economy. The ink work on the fish scales shows a disciplined approach, while the soft edges of the lotus petals suggest a more fluid application of pigment.
