A 1904 watercolour by Konstantin Somov depicting a nocturnal fireworks display over a formal garden, rendered with delicate, stippled light effects.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, created this work in 1904. The composition captures a nocturnal scene where a display of fireworks erupts above a formal garden. The artist employs a delicate, stippled technique to render the sparks and smoke, creating a sense of ephemeral light against the dark, moody sky. The architecture in the background appears as a silhouette, suggesting the structured elegance of an eighteenth-century park, a recurring theme in Somov's oeuvre.
Somov often looked to the past, drawing inspiration from the Rococo period and the artifice of courtly life. In this piece, the contrast between the controlled, dark environment and the sudden, chaotic brilliance of the fireworks creates a tension typical of his work. The figures in the foreground are barely discernible, acting as observers of the spectacle. This choice directs the viewer's attention to the atmospheric effects and the play of light rather than the human narrative. The use of gouache allows for opaque, luminous highlights that cut through the deeper tones of the watercolour wash.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the theatrical and the artificial. By focusing on a fleeting moment of celebration, Somov explores the intersection of nature and human-made spectacle. The composition is balanced, with the vertical trajectory of the fireworks providing a clear axis against the horizontal spread of the garden walls. His technical precision in applying small dots of colour mimics the physical sensation of light scattering in the night air. The result is a quiet, contemplative image that avoids sentimentality, focusing instead on the formal qualities of light and shadow within a historical setting.
