Joseph Wright of Derby, a painter associated with the Enlightenment, possessed a fascination with artificial light sources. During his Italian tour in the 1770s, he witnessed the Girandola, an annual firework display held at the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome. This painting captures the spectacle, where the fortress is engulfed in a brilliant, golden explosion of pyrotechnics against the dark Roman night.
