A striking abstract work from Yves Klein's 1961 series, created by scorching cardboard with a flame thrower to capture the raw energy of fire.
Yves Klein produced his series of Fire Paintings between 1961 and 1962, primarily at the Centre d'Essais du Gaz de France. This work, F31, represents the artist's interest in the elemental forces of nature. Klein utilised a flame thrower to scorch the surface of cardboard, capturing the physical trace of fire itself. The process relies on the interaction between the heat source and the material, resulting in a charred, organic form that radiates outward from a dense, dark centre.
The composition is minimalist. It avoids traditional brushwork or pigment application, instead allowing the combustion process to dictate the final appearance. The scorched area transitions from a deep, carbonised black at the core to lighter, amber-toned edges where the heat was less intense. This method aligns with Klein's broader objective to move beyond conventional painting techniques, seeking instead to record the energy of the elements directly onto a support.
By using fire, Klein engaged with the concept of the void and the ephemeral nature of existence. The work is not a representation of fire, but a physical index of its presence. The texture is rough and tactile, showing the uneven impact of the flame on the cardboard fibres. This series remains a distinct departure from his better-known International Klein Blue works, yet it shares the same focus on pure, unmediated experience. The resulting image possesses a raw, immediate quality that reflects the artist's desire to capture the invisible forces of the universe. It is a study in heat, destruction, and the transformation of matter, presenting a stark visual record of a controlled, yet inherently unpredictable, chemical reaction.
