This iconic woodblock print, often referred to as Red Fuji, belongs to the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Katsushika Hokusai produced this work during the Edo period, a time when travel and the appreciation of famous sites gained popularity among the Japanese public. The composition focuses on the volcanic peak of Mount Fuji, rendered in a striking reddish-brown hue that contrasts with the deep blue sky.

The sky is filled with horizontal, stylised cloud formations that suggest a crisp, early morning atmosphere. At the base of the mountain, a dense forest of dark green trees provides a grounding element to the composition. Hokusai employs a refined use of colour gradation, known as bokashi, to transition the sky from a deep indigo at the top to a lighter shade near the horizon.
