A detailed Neoclassical engraving depicting the discovery of Romulus and Remus by a shepherd and his family.
This engraving depicts the mythological discovery of the twins Romulus and Remus. The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical art, prioritising clear narrative action and balanced figures. A shepherd, central to the scene, presents one of the infants to a seated woman, likely Acca Larentia, who reaches out with an expression of maternal concern. A young child stands between them, acting as a visual bridge in the foreground. The setting includes a rustic shelter, a large tree, and a distant pastoral view, which provides a sense of scale and atmosphere.
Jacques-Louis Petit, a French artist active in the early nineteenth century, utilised the precise techniques of line engraving to render the textures of the drapery, the musculature of the figures, and the foliage. The work demonstrates the period's interest in classical mythology as a subject for moral and historical reflection. The figures are posed with a theatrical quality, typical of the era's academic training, where the arrangement of limbs and the direction of gazes were carefully calculated to guide the viewer through the narrative. The monochromatic palette allows the focus to remain on the draughtsmanship and the interplay of light and shadow across the scene. This print offers a window into the dissemination of classical themes through reproductive printmaking, a common practice for bringing historical subjects to a wider audience during the nineteenth century. The attention to detail in the background, including the subtle rendering of the rural environment, adds depth to the mythological encounter, grounding the legendary event in a tangible, albeit idealised, world.
