Gustave Caillebotte produced this study of the Plain of Gennevilliers during a period when he moved away from the urban subjects of Paris to focus on the rural surroundings of his property at Petit-Gennevilliers. The work captures the open expanse of the French countryside with a focus on the shifting light and atmospheric conditions of the sky.
The composition is dominated by a low horizon line, which allows the artist to dedicate a significant portion of the canvas to the cloud-filled sky.
