A traditional Muromachi period ink painting by Reisai, depicting the Zen figures Fenggan, Hanshan, and Shide through minimalist brushwork and atmospheric ink wash.
This hanging scroll by the Muromachi period artist Reisai depicts the legendary Zen figures Fenggan, Hanshan, and Shide. The composition employs the traditional ink wash technique, known as suiboku-ga, which relies on the economy of line and the expressive potential of diluted ink to convey spiritual themes. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, focusing on their posture and the surrounding atmosphere rather than realistic portraiture.
Reisai, an artist associated with the Daitoku-ji temple circle, was known for his ability to capture the unconventional nature of these eccentric monks. Fenggan is often identified by his association with a tiger, while Hanshan and Shide are typically portrayed as ragged, laughing figures. In this work, the artist uses soft, blurred ink washes to suggest a misty, ethereal environment, which mirrors the Zen concept of emptiness or void. The negative space occupies a large portion of the scroll, drawing the viewer into a meditative state.
The brushwork is deliberate and fluid, characteristic of the ink painting traditions that flourished under the influence of Chinese Chan Buddhism in Japan. The figures are positioned low on the scroll, grounded on a rocky outcrop, while the upper portion remains largely vacant, save for subtle tonal shifts in the ink. This arrangement reflects the Zen emphasis on simplicity and the rejection of worldly ornamentation. The work is a fine example of the period's aesthetic, where the interaction between ink, paper, and the viewer's perception creates a sense of quietude. The scroll retains its original mounting, which provides a formal frame for the delicate ink work, maintaining the integrity of the piece as a devotional object.
