Beskrivning
A geometric portrait by Albert Gleizes, featuring the fragmented, angular forms characteristic of his mature Cubist style.
Albert Gleizes was a central figure in the development of Cubism, both as a practitioner and a theorist. Alongside Jean Metzinger, he authored the seminal text 'Du Cubisme' in 1912, which helped define the movement for a wider audience. This work, 'Femme Cubiste', demonstrates his approach to the fragmentation of the human form, a hallmark of his mature style.
The composition is constructed through a series of interlocking geometric planes. Rather than attempting to replicate the physical reality of a sitter, Gleizes prioritises the structural logic of the canvas. The figure is deconstructed into angular shapes, with the head and torso suggested through shifts in colour and orientation. The palette is deliberate, utilising primary blues and reds alongside earthy ochres and blacks. These flat areas of colour create a sense of rhythm across the surface, guiding the eye through the various facets of the image.
Unlike the earlier, more monochromatic phase of Analytical Cubism, this piece reflects the later, more decorative tendencies of the movement. The forms are clearer, and the spatial relationships are more defined, moving away from the dense, overlapping grids of his contemporaries. The work functions as an investigation into how visual information can be reorganised without losing the essential character of the subject. By flattening the perspective and emphasising the two-dimensional nature of the medium, Gleizes invites the viewer to engage with the painting as an autonomous object. It is a clear example of the intellectual rigour he brought to his practice, balancing the demands of abstraction with the traditional subject of the portrait.
