A detailed nineteenth-century engraving depicting a lively Neapolitan festival scene with music, dance, and a decorated ox-drawn cart.
This engraving by Zachée Prévost captures the exuberant atmosphere of the Madonna dell'Arco festival near Naples. The scene depicts a group of Neapolitan peasants celebrating with music and dance, centred around a traditional ox-drawn cart decorated with greenery. The figures are rendered with dynamic movement, reflecting the festive spirit of the pilgrimage. One man plays a mandolin while others dance, their postures conveying a sense of rhythmic energy. The ox, also adorned with foliage, pulls the cart through a dusty, sun-drenched environment, with the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius visible in the distance.
Prévost, a skilled French engraver, demonstrates a mastery of tonal variation in this work. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye across the composition from the foreground dancers to the distant hills. The clothing of the participants is detailed, providing insight into the regional dress of the period. The composition balances the central group of revellers with the steady, grounded presence of the ox, creating a harmonious arrangement of figures and animals. This print offers a window into the cultural traditions of early nineteenth-century Italy, documenting a specific religious and social event with precision and artistic sensitivity. The monochromatic palette emphasises the textures of the landscape and the fabric of the costumes, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and their environment. As a piece of historical documentation, it preserves the visual character of a popular celebration that attracted many travellers and artists to the region during the Romantic era.
