A 1918 oil painting by Suzanne Valadon, depicting the rural landscape of Montcorin with bold forms and a focus on structural clarity.
Suzanne Valadon, a self-taught artist who began her career as a model for painters such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinct visual language characterised by firm outlines and a direct approach to her subjects. In this 1918 work, she captures the rural environment of Montcorin with a focus on structural clarity rather than atmospheric softness. The composition is anchored by a large, central tree that divides the frame, its foliage rendered in varied shades of green that suggest volume and weight.
To the left, a farmhouse with a stark red roof provides a geometric counterpoint to the organic forms of the surrounding vegetation. Valadon employs a palette that balances earthy tones with brighter greens and the sharp accent of the roof, creating a sense of physical presence. Her brushwork is deliberate, avoiding the fleeting effects often associated with earlier Impressionist works. Instead, she builds the scene through solid blocks of colour and clear definition. The rolling hills in the background are simplified into rhythmic shapes, leading the eye across the terrain without relying on traditional linear perspective.
Valadon’s work from this period reflects her interest in the tangible reality of the French countryside. She avoids sentimentality, choosing instead to document the specific character of the terrain. The painting demonstrates her ability to organise complex natural forms into a coherent, balanced arrangement. By focusing on the interplay between the architecture and the natural world, she creates a scene that feels grounded and immediate. This print captures the texture of her original oil application, preserving the firmness of her line and the specific tonal relationships she established on the canvas. It is an example of her mature style, where technical rigour meets a keen observation of the physical world.
