Beskrivning
A mysterious 1925 work by Paul Klee, featuring a dwarf-like figure within a circular, sgraffito-textured composition of symbolic forms.
Paul Klee produced Fairy Tale of the Dwarf in 1925, a period during which he taught at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The work displays his characteristic interest in symbolic language and the intersection of mythic narrative with geometric abstraction. Within a circular frame, Klee arranges a series of enigmatic figures and shapes that suggest a subterranean or otherworldly environment. The central figure, a dwarf-like character, is rendered with simplified, almost childlike proportions, yet the surrounding space is filled with complex, etched-like markings and celestial symbols.
Klee utilised a technique of scratching into the paint surface, a method known as sgraffito, to reveal lighter layers beneath the dark, atmospheric ground. This process creates a textured, fossil-like quality that reinforces the sense of an ancient or forgotten story. The composition is contained within a circular border, which acts as a lens or a portal into the scene. The palette remains largely monochromatic, relying on deep earth tones and ochre to establish a sombre, mysterious mood.
Rather than providing a literal illustration of a specific folk tale, Klee invites the viewer to interpret the relationships between the geometric forms and the central protagonist. The interplay between the sharp, angular lines of the dwarf and the softer, more fluid shapes in the background demonstrates his ability to balance order with spontaneity. This piece is representative of Klee's broader practice, where he sought to make visible the invisible forces of nature and the human imagination through a highly personal, codified visual vocabulary.
