An architectural study by Walter Gropius depicting the innovative glass and steel design of the Fagus Shoe-Last Factory in Alfeld.
This architectural study depicts the Fagus Shoe-Last Factory in Alfeld, Germany, a project that represents an early application of modernist principles in industrial design. Designed by Walter Gropius in collaboration with Adolf Meyer, the factory is recognised for its departure from traditional masonry construction. The drawing captures the southwest perspective, focusing on the innovative use of glass curtain walls and steel framing.
By removing load-bearing walls from the corners of the structure, Gropius achieved a sense of transparency and lightness that was unconventional for industrial buildings of the early twentieth century. The sketch employs a monochromatic palette, using graphite to define the geometric volumes and wash to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the site. The composition emphasises the horizontal lines of the factory wings, contrasted against the verticality of the main entrance block.
This work documents the transition toward the functionalist aesthetic that would later define the Bauhaus school. The drawing serves as a record of the design process, illustrating the clarity of form and the integration of industrial materials that Gropius sought to standardise. The absence of ornamental detail reflects the architect's focus on utility and the honest expression of structural components. As a piece of architectural history, the image provides insight into the development of modern industrial architecture, where the building itself functions as a machine for production. The precise lines and calculated perspective demonstrate the rigour applied to the project, which remains a significant example of early twentieth-century design.
