Painted in 1883, Fable represents an early phase in the career of Gustav Klimt. During this period, the artist adhered to the strict principles of the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, focusing on historical and allegorical subjects rendered with technical precision. This work predates the decorative, gold-leaf style for which he later gained international recognition.
The composition features a central female figure, draped in a translucent white cloth, standing amidst a collection of animals. A lion rests in the foreground, while two storks and a fox occupy the right side of the frame. The scene draws upon classical motifs and the tradition of animal fables, where human figures interact with the natural world in a symbolic manner. The lighting is dramatic, with the pale skin of the woman contrasting against the dark, shadowed forest background.
