Ezekiel Hersey - Edward Savage

A formal portrait of physician Ezekiel Hersey, depicted in a banyan and surrounded by the tools of his trade, painted by Edward Savage.

This portrait depicts Ezekiel Hersey, a physician from Hingham, Massachusetts, captured in a moment of quiet study. Edward Savage, a painter known for his contributions to early American portraiture, employs a formal composition that reflects the status of his subject. Hersey is shown seated, wearing a banyan, or dressing gown, which was a common garment for men of learning during the eighteenth century. The inclusion of this informal attire, paired with the presence of medical instruments in a case and leather-bound books on the table, suggests a life dedicated to intellectual and professional pursuits.

The setting includes a window to the left, providing a glimpse of the exterior, while a heavy, draped curtain on the right adds a sense of theatricality to the scene. The floor features a geometric, tiled pattern, which provides a sense of depth and structure to the interior space. Savage uses a muted palette, allowing the soft pink of the banyan lining and the curtain to draw the eye toward the subject. The lighting is controlled, focusing on the face and hands of the physician, which are rendered with careful attention to detail.

Savage, who spent time in London, was influenced by the portrait traditions of the period, yet this work maintains a distinct character typical of American colonial and post-colonial portraiture. The painting serves as a record of the sitter's profession and social standing, presented through the conventions of the era. The composition is balanced, with the vertical lines of the window and the curtain framing the seated figure. This piece offers a view into the domestic and professional life of an eighteenth-century gentleman, rendered with the precision and formal restraint characteristic of Savage's output.
