A classical etching by Gérard de Lairesse depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, executed in the Dutch Golden Age style.
This etching by Gérard de Lairesse depicts the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Lairesse, a painter and theorist active during the Dutch Golden Age, was known for his adherence to classical principles and his influence on the academic style of the late seventeenth century. The composition follows the conventions of the period, utilising a clear narrative structure and idealised human forms.
In the foreground, an angel with a flaming sword gestures towards the exit, directing the couple away from their former home. Adam and Eve appear in a state of distress, their postures conveying the gravity of their departure. The serpent remains visible near Eve, serving as a reminder of the transgression that necessitated this exile. The background features sparse foliage and a distant horizon, typical of the period's approach to setting biblical scenes within a classical framework.
Lairesse employed a precise etching technique, using varied line weights to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the drapery. The billowing fabric of the angel's cloak adds a sense of movement to the scene, contrasting with the more static, mournful poses of the central figures. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Disce omnes. Infidias crimine ab uno', translates to 'Learn from one the treachery of all', reflecting the didactic nature often found in works of this era. This print demonstrates the artist's technical skill and his commitment to the formal language of the Baroque period. It remains a representative example of how biblical narratives were interpreted through the lens of classical aesthetics in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century.
