A preparatory study for the Stoclet Frieze, this work features a dancer adorned in geometric patterns against a backdrop of swirling, calligraphic branches.
Expectation is a preparatory study for the Stoclet Frieze, a series of mosaics commissioned for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Gustav Klimt designed these panels between 1905 and 1909, representing the height of his mature period. The figure depicted is a dancer, her body oriented in profile while her face gazes directly at the viewer. Her posture is rigid, yet her form is enveloped in a garment decorated with geometric triangles and horizontal bands.
The background consists of a stylised tree of life, featuring swirling, calligraphic branches that fill the space with rhythmic, organic lines. Klimt employs a flat, decorative approach to the composition, prioritising pattern over spatial depth. The use of gold paint and metallic tones reflects the artist's interest in Byzantine mosaics and decorative arts. The figure's head is adorned with an elaborate, jewel-like headdress, which contrasts with the fluid, linear nature of the surrounding branches.
This work demonstrates the characteristic aesthetic of the Vienna Secession, where the boundary between fine art and applied design is intentionally blurred. The grid lines visible on the paper indicate its function as a working drawing for the final mosaic execution. By focusing on the interplay between the human form and abstract ornamentation, Klimt creates a visual language that is both precise and decorative. The palette remains restrained, relying on earth tones, muted greens, and gold to maintain a sense of unity across the composition. This study provides insight into the meticulous planning required for the Stoclet Frieze, showing how Klimt balanced representational elements with his signature geometric stylisation.
