A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a sudden rainstorm at the Tadasu River in Kyoto, featuring figures crossing a bridge near traditional tea houses.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige belongs to the series Famous Places in Kyoto, produced during the mid-19th century. The composition captures a sudden summer downpour at the Tadasu River, a location known for its proximity to the Shimogamo Shrine. Hiroshige employs his characteristic diagonal lines to represent the falling rain, a technique that effectively conveys the atmospheric conditions of the scene.
In the foreground, figures cross a narrow wooden bridge, shielding themselves with paper umbrellas. Their hurried postures suggest the urgency of seeking cover from the weather. To the left and right, tea houses extend over the water, their open structures allowing patrons to observe the rain while remaining sheltered. The interior of these buildings reveals small groups of people engaged in conversation or rest, providing a human element to the natural setting. The trees, rendered with varied ink washes, frame the composition and add depth to the riverbank.
Hiroshige was a master of the ukiyo-e genre, particularly noted for his ability to depict weather and seasonal changes. His work often focused on the interaction between human activity and the natural environment. This print demonstrates his skill in balancing architectural elements with the fluid, transient nature of a rainstorm. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on subtle blues, greens, and earthy tones to maintain a sense of harmony. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic and social life in Kyoto during the Edo period, documenting specific locations that held cultural significance at the time. The use of the bokashi technique, or colour gradation, is visible in the sky and water, adding a soft, atmospheric quality to the overall image.
