A detailed engraving by Gotthold Dietrich depicting Johannes Schilling's allegorical sculpture 'Evening' from the Brühl'sche Terrasse in Dresden.
This engraving by Gotthold Dietrich depicts the sculptural group 'Evening', one of the four allegorical figures created by Johannes Schilling for the staircase of the Brühl'sche Terrasse in Dresden. The original bronze sculpture, completed in 1868, forms part of a larger programme representing the times of day. Dietrich captures the sculptural form through precise, rhythmic line work, translating the three-dimensional volume of the bronze into a two-dimensional graphic medium.
The composition centres on a bearded male figure, crowned with a star and foliage, who holds a bowl. He is flanked by two female figures, one holding a tambourine and the other a lute. The drapery of their garments is rendered with careful attention to shadow and weight, reflecting the academic training common to German printmakers of the nineteenth century. The figures exhibit the idealised proportions and calm, balanced poses characteristic of the Neoclassical tradition, which remained a dominant aesthetic in public monument design throughout the period.
Dietrich’s technique relies on the use of parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the central figure and the soft folds of the fabric. By isolating the group against a neutral background, the print focuses the viewer on the interaction between the figures and the symbolic attributes they carry. This work serves as a record of the public art that defined the urban character of Dresden during the late nineteenth century. It provides a clear view of the sculptural details that might otherwise be obscured by the scale or placement of the original bronze monument. The print is a fine example of reproductive engraving, a craft that allowed the public to engage with monumental sculpture through the medium of the printed page.
